Austin, Texas has a rich history dating back centuries. In fact, Austin has been the site of human habitation since, at least, 9200 BC and is almost as large as New York City, expanding about 280 square miles. Originally named Waterloo, Austin was later renamed in 1839 after Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of Texas.”
Austin also has a beautiful bird population with hundreds of wild Monk Parakeets freely flying around the city and even co-habiting with mockingbirds and eastern whip-poor-wills. Interestingly, whip-poor-wills are named after the sound they make.
In addition to its bird population, Austin is also full of “watering holes” or, more commonly known as swimming pools. One of the most famous and oldest, Deep Eddy Pool, began as a swimming pool in the Colorado River before eventually becoming a resort in 1920s. During the Great Depression, a bathhouse was built and Deep Eddy Pool is now listed as a historical landmark on the National Register of Historic Places and have served as inspiration for various art pieces.
Another one of these majestic watering holes is the Hamilton Pool Preserve, which is a natural pool that was created when an underground river dome collapsed due to thousands of years of erosion. Designated a nature preserve in 1990, the Hamilton Pool Preserve is home to the Golden-Cheeked Warbler, and other birds as well. Visitors can either hike the trails around the preserve, which are filled with juniper and oak savannah as well as a variety of rate plants such as red bay or the chatter box orchid, or swim in the natural pool as well as bathe under the waterfall “that never dries up.”
Austin, which has also been nicknamed the “Live Music Capital of the World,” has an eclectic and enormous live music scene. The nickname came about in 1991 when it was discovered that Austin had more live music venues than anywhere in the nation. More than 1,900 artists and bands live in or around Austin and, on any given day, there is at least 200 live music venues which means that an Austin resident or visitor can catch a show anywhere, any time. Among the most famous and popular are the South by Southwest (SXSW), Austin City Limits Music Festival and the Fun Fun Fun Fest, to name a few.
One of the best things about Austin, is that every day is Taco Tuesday. For those who prefer another type of culinary adventure, brunch is also a big deal in Austin. One of Austin’s hot spots, Kerbey Lane, is famous for its cinnamon pancakes and if that is not something to look forward to, then Austin has been named one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. for food trucks.
